LANGUAGE IS A WORLD VIEW, and specific words are glimpses to that vision of the world. Words, however, reveal to us not just their capacity to signify objects and concepts, but their power to build a sense of the fantastic. This list will look at ten ancient Tagalog words, almost all of them no longer being used. An average Filipino who uses Tagalog as first language has probably not even heard most, if not all, of these before. These ten words refer to things that are undeniably fantastic, for they question our sense of the real. That they existed in the vocabulary of the ancient Tagalogs suggest a certain way of looking at the world that relates to the fantastic as a matter of fact, or to the imagination as a necessary human function.
